Giving the Gift of Equitable Transportation

The word Christmas evokes a myriad of sights and sounds, as well as a multitude of feelings. Jolly Christmas carols, colorful and vibrant Christmas lights, the aroma of evergreen trees and Christmas cookies… these sights and sounds readily come to mind at the mention of the word Christmas.

Another word that has become synonymous to Christmas is gift-giving. Gift-giving is regarded as one of the most beloved Christmas traditions.. So much so that we have come up with various forms of gift-giving such as exchange gifts and secret Santa. So much so that Americans spend an estimated $960 billion dollars on gifts and other holiday purchases every year.

Despite the shopping frenzy that tends to overcome the holidays, isn’t it true that our hearts long for gifts that are more meaningful and, often, intangible?

The Gift of Equitable Transportation

This season, Medstar continues to give the gift of equitable transportation. Transport equity is defined as affording everyone travel modes that are safe, secure, affordable and reliable. Yet. certain individuals often find themselves at a disadvantage in terms of mobility.

For instance, people on wheelchairs or those undergoing dialysis who are taking trips to hospitals or clinics do not easily find transportation. Even if they do, it can be expensive. In fact, transportation problems proved to be a primary challenge for low-income communities needing access to timely and essential medical care.

If there is a gift that is meaningful and useful, providing equitable transportation to those who need it most should probably be on top of the list..

Medstar Commitment

For almost four decades, Medstar has provided safe, reliable and affordable transportation for clients with unique medical needs. Throughout the years, we have offered wheelchair-accessible vehicles, bariatric transportation, secure passage for dialysis patients, patients with dementia and people suffering from terminal illnesses, as well as other forms of non-emergency medical transportation.

We have partnered with hospitals, clinics, medical institutions and other organizations committed to provide viable solutions to the current barriers to mobility among our clients.

This Christmas season, we at Medstar reaffirm our commitment to give the gift of equitable transportation to those who need it by driving happiness through service.

Honoring Our Heroes

Today, we raise our flags to celebrate with great joy and pride the lives of all those who have fought with incredible grit and courage to protect our liberty.

Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11 each year, honors those who have served in the military for the United States of America. Honor, which embodies all Army values, is the theme of this year’s Veterans’ Day celebration.

The US Army defines honor as a matter of carrying out, acting, and living the values of respect, duty, loyalty, selfless service, integrity, and personal courage in everything you do. Thus, it is only fitting for veterans to be celebrated with honor for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

After accomplishing years of active duty and service, veterans still have to face their own fights within. Over the past years, there has been a reported increase in the number of issues surrounding veterans. Public and private organizations, along with veterans themselves, have been working together to provide support and create more opportunities for veterans.

In honor of this day, Medstar Transportation will not only continue to give veterans the care they deserve but also work on expanding the range of services we can provide to improve their quality of life.

To our dear veterans, please know that we recognize your sacrifices, and each of you has left a name worth remembering. We honor your life, your grave, your family, your soul, your heart. You are loved. You are never forgotten.

Breathe and Embrace Peace: Ways to Manage your Stress

Stress is our body’s response to pressure. It typically occurs when we are in a difficult spot that we don't feel we have any control over. November 2 is National Stress Awareness Day. It is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we can manage stress.

Carole Spiers, the chairman of ISMA, established National Stress Awareness Day every first Wednesday in November to raise public awareness and assist people in recognizing, managing and reducing stress in their personal and professional lives.

It's possible to benefit from a bit of stress. It may inspire you to act and complete your tasks. Additionally, it might excite and motivate you. However, excessive stress can cause stomach issues, and heart health issues, and create a chemical imbalance between your brain and nervous system. That may have escalated quickly but it’s true.

So here are some ways provided by the ABH to manage your stress:

Find Your Stress Triggers

Think about what is causing your stress. Ask yourself questions, challenge your beliefs, and focus on a new idea that helps steer you away from your triggers.

Ease Stress through a Better Diet

A good diet, coupled with exercise, is a great combination to help reduce stress and improve your overall health.

Schedule Sleep

Create a schedule for yourself that outlines when you work, when you stop working, when you exercise and when you take time for yourself. Sleep should be part of the schedule, so make sure you get to sleep when it is time for sleep.

Figure Out What Works for You

You can use many tools to combat stress. Remember, what works for another person might not work for you, so don’t get down if something you try does not work. This is all part of the process of finding what works for you so you can manage stress going forward.

Stress management is difficult. There are some things that we can't control. However, in these situations, it is even more important to recognize the things under our control that we can change or solve. Let’s try to breathe and embrace peace.

Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer's

Every September, people from all over the world join the movement against the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. World Alzheimer's Day is a day to raise awareness and support those who suffer from the disease and their loved ones who are indirectly affected.

This year’s theme, ‘Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s,’ continues on from the 2021 campaign according to Alzheimer’s Disease International. The campaign is focused on warning signs, early detection of dementia,  post-diagnosis support, along with the continued effect of COVID-19 on the global dementia community.

Over 50 million people worldwide suffer from dementia, a degenerative brain disorder that impairs memory, competence, cognition, and behavioral awareness. At the same time, there can also be significant physical, emotional, and financial costs to individuals looking after patients with Dementia and its many types.

As it impacts mobility in general, Medstar Transportation is here to help and promote awareness about the stigma and concerns surrounding Alzheimer's. We make every effort to provide the best possible care and service for the benefit of the patients and those who care for them. Let us all work together to obtain a better understanding of dementia and establish helpful responses.

Happy Labor Day!

Held on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate and recognize the people behind Medstar’s advocacy to drive happiness through service. Despite the continuing health threats and economical crisis in the world, they remained consistent in fulfilling their duties.

At Medstar, we honor and celebrate our employees in every way we can– and this Labor Day is special. We interviewed dedicated employees about what they love most about working at Medstar and what keeps them driven.

Here’s what they said:

I stayed in Medstar because I feel appreciated and my hard work does not go unnoticed! I enjoy being able to be there for the customers. Medstar is a great place to work because it cares about and supports its employees.
— Joseph Brandt, Field Assistant
What I love most about Medstar are the customers and the adventures we are on with each trip. I love the way our customers light up when they see me coming. I stayed at Medstar because of the customer and the staff, and the challenge is never the same–each day is different!
— Teresa Asbury, Driver/Scheduler
I like working flexible hours and being treated like family. I actually had two job offers, but I heard we’re able to drive war veterans around when we get the contract so I stuck with Medstar. It’s been a privilege and honor to drive veterans to appointments, talk to them and listen.
— Dwayne Evans, Driver
What I love most about this Company is that I feel like they really care about their employees and are very flexible when I need them. Besides, they are always on top of everything. Whatever it is, they always answer you and help you with whatever you need. I stayed in this Company because I like to do what I do. I enjoy being able to help others, and I hope to continue here for much longer.
— Sandy Martinez, Driver
I love that Medstar is a small ever growing family-owned business helping out the communities all over Washington State. It’s like your family while away from your own family.
— Geana Rivera, Call Center Manager
What I love most about Medstar is seeing all kinds of places all over Washington State. I’ve been to all four corners and all over the central parts. I would have never been to these places if I didn’t drive for Medstar. If someone asks me if I’ve been to some unknown, out of way place…. I’ll probably say ‘Been there, done that
— Glenn Hastings, Driver
What I love most about Medstar is the camaraderie among my co-drivers & other employees. There is that bonding with each other, helping & laughing together. I feel secure working with Medstar, not only with the pay but also with the van I’m using. Regular maintenance & inspections make me secure to drive my van. Our clients make me stay with the company. I don’t deny that there are clients who are a pain in the neck, but the majority of them are worthwhile giving the best service possible, I love serving them.
— Ernesto Catanghal, Driver
Medstar is a great place to work in. Prior to joining the Company, I worked in the office for more than 15 years. Medstar gave me an opportunity to experience a flexible, remote and fun working environment. Now, I have more time to be with my family. Furthermore, I appreciate the Management for being open to suggestions and being supportive so we can fulfill our assigned tasks.
— Ivan Lim, Developer

Salute to our Medstar employees who never fail to provide safe and reliable services to individuals and communities in need 24/7. Seasons may change but our team’s dedication remains this Labor Day and the days ahead.

International Youth Day

On August 12, the world commemorates International Youth Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of youth concerns and recognizing their capacity to participate fully in today's global society. The goal of this year's theme, Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages, is to strengthen the idea that action across all generations is required to accomplish sustainable goals and leave no one behind.

No One is Left Behind

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, “To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world needs to leverage the full potential of all generations.” To ensure that ‘no one is left behind’ and achieve sustainable development, it is crucial to collaborate and promote positive relationships across generations.

Creating a World for All Ages

The Global Report on Ageism emphasizes that ageism has a negative impact on our well-being and is a significant obstacle to establishing effective policies and taking action on healthy aging.  This year's International Youth Day strives to build a world for all ages by fostering intergenerational solidarity. It is also meant to serve as a reminder that age-based injustice and disadvantage must be averted.

Medstar Transportation will partake in this celebration by ensuring that our services are provided with utmost excellence and safety to customers, regardless of their age. Join us in creating a world for all ages!

Heart of the Brave

Do you know that August 7 is the National Purple Heart Day? It was first observed in 2014 to celebrate and pay tribute to the brave service members who defended the nation but suffered injuries or lost their lives in the line of duty.

How it started

George Washington awarded the first Purple Heart, formerly known as the Badge of Merit in 1782. At that time, the award was only given to honor enlisted and deserving individuals. According to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DINF), It was in 1944 that the policy was tweaked slightly and the Purple Heart was given the purpose it is known for today, specifically to honor those who have been wounded or died.

Supporting our Heroes

One of the simplest ways to support this celebration is by paying respect to our veterans. You may also donate to organizations and join their outreach programs in support of Purple Heart recipients through the Purple Heart Foundation. At Medstar, we stay true to our promise to constantly provide the best possible service to veterans who selflessly fought for our country.

The men and women of our troops put their lives on the line everyday to keep the nation safe and sound. Join us in commemorating their bravery and sacrifice this National Purple Heart Day.

Lung health matters

During the month of July, we celebrate World Bronchiectasis Day. The declaration was announced by international lung health organizations from the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia in order to promote public awareness of bronchiectasis and its rising prevalence in many nations.

So why does lung health matter? The Task Force for Lung Health emphasizes that you can have problems doing even the smallest task if you have lung problems. One of which is  Bronchiectasis, a lung disease characterized by enlarged or scarred airways that cannot clear mucus properly, resulting in recurring lung infections.

According to GAAPP, the advocacy aims to raise global awareness, share knowledge, and discuss ways to reduce the burden of Bronchiectasis for patients and their families worldwide as there is no cure to the disease yet. Medstar expresses its full support for this campaign as a community that promotes an enhanced quality of life. We can provide safe and reliable transportation services for the early detection and treatment of bronchiectasis, which may impact the longevity and welfare of people affected.

Let's work together to make this world easier to breathe in!

What Memorial Day Means to Me

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day because of the early tradition of placing flowers, wreaths, and flags on graves, is a day dedicated to remembering those who have died while serving our country. The national observance date was shifted to the last Monday of May in 1971 by federal lawmakers, although in several states, Memorial Day is still observed every May 30.

But more than just a long weekend where we take time off from work, what does Memorial Day really mean to us?

Here’s what some of us in the Medstar Team think:

Memorial Day has always been very memorable for me. It’s hard to forget that one day every year when every family takes out their flag and enjoys great food with other friends. I think that more than these barbecues and show of flags, we should never forget what this day is for—it’s for remembering those who died for our country, whether they’re family or not.
It bothers me that Memorial Day in this generation seems to have turned into a mere three-day weekend, where we watch Netflix, go to the beach or have some barbecue with friends. I think it is time that we pay close attention to this important day and give a more meaningful acknowledgement to those who have served our country.
Memorial Day is not a time to buy cheap linens, beds, vehicles, or anything else. It is neither a joyous nor a political day. It is a time when we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice–Those who gave their lives, time, and talents so that the rest of us can enjoy our freedom! To me, this is a day of contemplation, grief, and thankfulness for all our heroes, as well as for the Gold Star families who have lost a child, spouse, or parent.

Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those who died while serving in the military. It is a highly personal day for many who lost loved ones while serving the country. There are a few essential Memorial Day traditions that we may honor such as hanging our flags at half staff, visiting local veterans' cemeteries, and many other meaningful traditions.

Medstar recognizes and honors the sacrifices made by men and women who died while in service. We are delighted to provide our safe and reliable services to families who have lost their loved ones in the military, as well as veterans who have dedicated their life to safeguarding our country.

World Hemophilia Day

World Hemophilia Day is celebrated every 17th of April and aims to raise awareness about hemophilia across the world. The theme of this year’s event is “Access for All: Partnership. Policy. Progress. Engaging your government, integrating inherited bleeding disorders into national policy“.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines hemophilia as an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood doesn't clot properly. This can lead to spontaneous bleeding as well as bleeding following injuries or surgery. The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) estimates that over 75% of people living with hemophilia worldwide have not yet been identified and diagnosed.

For the millions of people who remain untreated, more knowledge means better diagnosis, treatment, and access to care. By raising awareness and bringing hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders to the attention of policymakers, we can increase sustainable and equitable access to care and treatment.

At present, people with bleeding problems are finding it much more difficult to get to their checkups and treatments as a result of the pandemic. Through our expert care and reliable transportation services, we at Medstar Transportation are ready to help clients in receiving the treatment they need.

Let us work together to increase public awareness and understanding of the concerns surrounding adequate medical care!

National Nutrition Month

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? It is an annual campaign that started in 1973 in response to the growing interest in nutrition.

The theme of this year’s National Nutrition Month is Celebrate a World of Flavors. According to registered dietitian nutritionist Libby Mills, "Celebrating the cultural heritage, traditions, and recipes from all people is a tasty way to nourish ourselves, learn about one another, and find appreciation in our diversity." Thus, everyone is encouraged to learn about making informed food choices and creating healthy eating and physical activity habits during this month-long observance.

Healthy food is essential regardless of our age and gender, but it is likely that we do not pay enough attention to it, take shortcuts, and are blissfully unaware of the harm we may be doing to ourselves and the environment. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist can help you work towards developing healthy habits while also introducing you to new foods and flavors. To find a registered dietitian nutritionist near you, use the Academy's online Find an Expert service. We at Medstar can bring you to your appointments through our safe and reliable transportation services so you can start your healthy eating journey now!

Brush up this February!

Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month? The American Dental Association aims to celebrate this month-long national oral health campaign to emphasize the importance and benefits of oral health in children, their caregivers, teachers, and many others.

Poor oral health may leave serious effects on young children, which is why the National Children's Dental Health Month emphasizes the significance of instilling good oral habits at a young age to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles.  It is also critical for communities to recognize children's oral health awareness since the most prevalent chronic pediatric condition is tooth decay. We hope that children all across the world will be able to bring healthy smiles through continued educational programs and initiatives.

According to Colgate, making an appointment at the dentist is one of the best ways to celebrate this month’s awareness campaign. The earlier children are introduced to dental checkups, the more at ease they will be.

So here at Medstar, we are ready to contribute to your child's oral health journey by providing you with safe and reliable rides to your appointments!

Let’s work together in providing children an opportunity to a lifetime of healthy smiles!

Long-Distance Drive

Road trips and long-distance drives can be a lot of fun. But if you usually commute or have someone drive for you regularly, you may not realize how challenging and tiring driving across the state or even a few towns can be.

Here are a few reasons why:

* Road conditions can strain your eyes and patience. The bright hot sun or even snow and ice can either make you sleepy or wear you out.

*If you are distracted and are not well rested, long-distance driving can be as risky as driving drunk. The long-straight stretches of road can lull your brain and lead to dangerous situations.

*If you lack preparation and planning, you might find yourself lost on unfamiliar roads, not knowing where to stop for the night or where to find something to eat.

But here at Medstar Transportation, you don’t have to worry about all these! We can take care of the driving for you.

Just contact 800-236-2011 and we will make sure that you’ll have a fun, safe, and reliable ride.

Off you go!

Share a Little Drop

Do you know that January is dedicated to selfless individuals donating their blood? And what better way to kick off the new year than to commemorate the National Blood Donor Month!

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. Patients need blood to survive surgeries, cancer treatments, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. The demand for blood is continuous, but only 3% of qualified individuals donate blood each year. We, at Medstar Transportation, recognize this need and we encourage all those who are capable and willing to donate blood.

Remember, blood donation does not only improve the health of those who receive it, but it also helps the donor maintain his or her well-being! In fact, donating blood may lower your chances of developing cancer and minimize your risks of having a stroke or heart attack. Isn't it a win-win situation?

But before you sit on that chair and roll up your sleeves, make sure you're qualified so you don't put the potential receiver and yourself at risk. If you are unsure about such requirements, you should visit your local healthcare facility and have yourself checked before donating blood. And Medstar, as always, is ready to deliver safe and reliable rides for you!

Giving blood is a simple act that can have a significant impact on the lives of others. So let’s celebrate the National Blood Donor month by participating in this campaign and inspiring more people to donate blood in the future.

You don’t have to be a doctor to save lives!

HAPPY LABOR DAY!

Labor Day marks the end of summer. For most people, it simply means a day off-- a time for picnics, parades, fireworks and other activities. But this 2021, as we reflect upon the challenges brought by the pandemic, Labor Day takes on a whole new meaning.

For the past year, we have seen how the American workforce-- our laborers-- have kept this country moving despite the healthcare crises and significant losses in the economic output. So today, we pay tribute to them, for all that they have done in keeping our nation prosperous and strong. Let us take a moment to reflect upon the true meaning of work and appreciate all those who have labored diligently from field to field, city to city, or desk to desk, to build up and bless our lives.

And as we celebrate Labor Day 2021, Medstar Transportation would also like to recognize some of our employees who are celebrating their work anniversaries this month of September. Though working for a transportation company has never been easy, these people have done a tremendous job in making sure that we are able to access safe and reliable rides 24/7.

Here’s why they love their job:

“I love working with the people and getting to know our clients!”
- Doyle M., celebrating his 4th year as Driver

“What I love most about working for Medstar is getting to know the regulars who've been riding my bus for 3 years.”
- Shari Z., celebrating her 3rd year as Route Driver

“Now that we transport Veterans to and from their appointments, we are able to visit with them and exchange stories. Since I'm a Vet myself, they're usually interested to hear about recent deployments--and having such meaningful exchanges is what I love most about my job.”
- Daniel G., celebrating his 1st year as Driver

“Medstar values your loyalty, and hard work is appreciated. A job well done is always acknowledged.”
- Xy C., celebrating her 1st year as Customer Support Representative

“What I love best about Medstar is the work environment. The people you work with are very friendly and accommodating. Indeed, working here feels like home.”

- Jeff L., celebrating his 1st year as Admin Assistant

“Wow! One amazing year with Medstar, that was really fast! I've always loved hearing inspiring stories from people. I love to hear what or who inspires them to get up and hustle, and my job as a recruiter brings me all that. This is precisely why I love my job. But more than the job description, I love the team that I get to work with. The job is not a walk in the park but they make it bearable! And I would not have made it for a year if not because of them. I've said this a few months ago and I will say this again today-- Medstar is family. Cheers to more awesome years with you, my fam!”

- Nova C., celebrating her 1st year as Recruiter

“My one-year stay with Medstar rekindled what I used and loved to do 3 years ago, and that is customer service. Working in the company has opened a lot of opportunities for me to improve and develop skills I thought I can no longer acquire. I am truly grateful and looking forward to more years with Medstar! Cheers!”
- Ria M., celebrating her 1st year as Dispatcher

Medstar has been a life-changing opportunity for me. I love how hard work is valued and potentials are acknowledged regardless of gender and race.”

- Junie T., celebrating his 1st year as Human Resources Assistant

Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Do you know that over a billion people or 15% of the world’s population have some form of disability or impairment? But we, at Medstar Transportation, believe that accessibility, not disability, is the problem that we need to address.

So this month of May, as we celebrate the tenth Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we continue to remain committed and focus on inclusion and digital accessibility so that all those who need safe and reliable rides can access transportation, regardless of disabilities.

When you book your ride with us, we will make sure that we have full knowledge on:

  • whether or not you would use a mobility assistance device

  • the type of vehicle you would like to book (e.g. wheelchair accessible vehicles)

  • whether or not you would require assistance getting to and from the vehicle

  • whether or not you would need any other type of assistance, including accommodations for:

    • auditory impairments

    • hearing impairments

    • vision impairments

    • intellectual disabilities

    • any assistance that would be relevant to your mobility needs.

So book a ride with us and we will get you to your destination safely. At Medstar, we provide greater equality...

...because we believe accessibility is a right that should never be deprived.

Salute to All Nurses!

Even before the pandemic, nurses already play a critical role in our communities. They are at the front line of patient care and at the forefront of innovation in public health. And with Medstar’s commitment to providing safe and reliable rides especially to those who need access to healthcare and medical facilities, we constantly witness how important nurses are.

Do you know that some of our staff are actually nurses by profession?

“When my mom and grandmother started to have cardiac problems, I decided to pursue the nursing profession. I studied hard until I earned my license. I worked briefly as a nurse in a hospital, but eventually transitioned to other jobs so I can better take care of my children. Despite this, I chose jobs that are related to the medical field so I can expand my knowledge about this profession. Right now, I am working at Medstar’s call center, and I still get the chance to talk to patients and to the elderly. Somehow, I still feel that I am able to practice my profession. This is because I still get the chance to assist clients who need safe and reliable transportation to get to dialysis centers or cancer facilities. Because I am a nurse, I feel that I am able to empathize, serve and understand our clients better.”
-Xy, Call Center Team

"I've chosen nursing because of my personal philosophy. I've always had a desire to help others, especially the sick members of our family. I remember back then, when my grandma was very ill and was bedridden, all I could ever do was to stand there and watch my brother perform several medical procedures--then it struck me... I knew I needed to be one of those who can actually do the same thing that my brother could do. From that day, I swore to myself that I will become a nurse and help people. Fast forward to this day, my life had several twisties and twirlies which led me to stop serving as a nurse. And then I came across Medstar. This family is the closest that I can ever get to help those who are in need--patients, passengers, and basically everyone who needs assistance. I knew that this is where I truly belong and voilà! Here I am today, helping up in recruiting drivers for our dear clients. I'm very happy I have found a family that brings out the best in me. Medstar is the reason why my passion as a nurse, even though I am not practicing my profession, still lives within me.”
-Nova, Recruitment Team

Today, May 6, is Nurse Appreciation Day. It also marks the beginning of the National Nurses Week! And we, at Medstar, would like to honor all our nurses across the globe! You are the heart of healthcare, and your genuine smile and caring hands are enough to make this world a better place.

No Work is Insignificant

Work is an essential part of our being. We are all workers by nature! This is because any effort that leads to any form of development-- may it be an increase in financial capabilities and material assets, advancement of skills and title, growth of social network, or accomplishment of even a simple task-- gives us meaning and purpose. Working provides us with countless opportunities to develop and grow as individuals, teams and communities. It helps us provide for ourselves and our families, showcase our talents and skills, learn new things, reach certain goals, and become part of something bigger than ourselves.

And what better way to reflect upon the importance of work than by joining all workers across the globe in celebrating Labor Day or International Workers’ Day. Before the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, we would usually see or hear about people gathering together on the 1st of May to either celebrate this event or hold big rallies. When COVID hit, we learned the hard way that it is human labor that truly keeps our communities going. Machineries and establishments may remain intact and unaffected by this virus--but without workers, we have witnessed how all these have become inoperative and lifeless.

So on this day, Medstar Transportation joins all nations across the globe in celebrating the value of work and the achievements of workers in various sectors. We have witnessed how the work that we put in collectively-- may it be in transportation, commerce, manufacturing, education, or any other industry-- makes this world a better place.

Today, may we all have an increased appreciation for human labor. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.”

Happy Labor Day--and let’s all continue to work hard!

April 16 is National Stress Awareness Day

Every year, the American Psychological Association (APA) conducts surveys across the United States to understand the sources of stress and how people are responding to it. Since 2007, most stressors indicated in these surveys revolve around the impact of economic downturns and political conflicts. This year and the past year, however, have been different because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the continuous efforts to adjust to the new normal, the APA survey results show that 8 in 10 adults (78%) consider COVID-19 as a significant source of stress. Moreover, 2 in 3 adults (67%) claim that they experience increased stress over the course of the pandemic.

Despite the continuous efforts to adjust to the new normal, the APA survey results show that 8 in 10 adults (78%) consider COVID-19 as a significant source of stress. Moreover, 2 in 3 adults (67%) claim that they experience increased stress over the course of the pandemic.

With this, the Medstar Team has recognized the importance of being aware and being able to manage the stressors in our lives, especially during these challenging times. Here are some ways in which the members of the Medstar Community are coping with stress in a healthy way.

“The pressure of being able to keep my job to provide for my family and the fear of contracting the virus make me anxious. However, the support group that I have from work, family, and friends help me stay positive. I also give myself time to rest, relax, and reflect about life through leisure and recreation.
-Jeff, Admin Assistant

I take care of my grandpa when I'm not working, so making sure his health is maintained which includes cooking, cleaning, scheduling and attending his appointments can become stressful when I don't have a lot of free time. I like to do yoga, gardening, exercising, and therapy to help improve my well being and manage my stress.”
-Kameron, Customer Service Representative

It is hard trying to balance school and work at the same time. The way I manage stress is by trying to do all my school work right when I get home from my job so I can have a relaxing and stress-free weekend. It is hard, but I somehow manage.”
-Ikra, Dispatcher

“I manage stress by spending time outdoors, with family and friends. Even a few minutes of walking or hiking can make a difference in how you feel.
-Jhoanna, IT Assistant

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has enumerated various ways on how to cope with stress. These include taking breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories; making time to unwind; connecting with others and with your community; and taking care of your body. However, it is important to remember that we all have unique ways of coping and managing stress. What’s important is for us to discover what works best for us.

April 16 is National Stress Awareness Day. And today, may we all find the strength to face the uncertainties of tomorrow. Breathe. Let our minds calm down and our hearts rest for a while.

Distracted Driving: No post, text, message or call is more important than someone’s life

Do you know that every single day, approximately 1,000 people in the United States are injured and nine are killed because of distracted driving? This means that annually, more than 365,000 people are affected. In fact, in 2019 alone, 3,142 people in America died from accidents caused by distracted driving, according to the latest data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

But what has been causing distractions among drivers?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, anything that takes your attention away from driving is considered a distraction. This may be a visual distraction, which causes you to take your eyes off the road, such as looking at billboards or glancing on your phone. This may also be a manual distraction, which causes you to take your hands off the wheel, such as eating, drinking or reaching for objects. Lastly, road accidents may be caused by cognitive distraction which takes your mind off the task of driving. Examples of cognitive distraction include talking with other people, or singing with the radio. Any of these can endanger not just the people inside the moving vehicle, but also others on the road.

Among all these distractions, however, texting while driving, is the most alarming. This is because it simultaneously involves visual, manual and cognitive distractions. Cell phone use while driving is said to take a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--the equivalent of 55 mph driving the length of an entire football field, blindfolded!

Indeed, in a split second, distracted driving can ruin someone’s life, injure or kill others--or worse, leave a hole in the hearts of those who are affected by irresponsible road accidents.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. And we, at Medstar Transportation, recognize the importance of eliminating all visual, manual, and cognitive driving distractions. Most importantly, we continue to remind all drivers to avoid texting while driving.

We must remember to keep our eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind on the drive-- Because no post, text, message, or call is more important than someone’s life.
