The month of February is dedicated to the National Children’s Dental Health Month as a way of helping jump start children on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. But did you know that children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at a greater risk of dental problems?
Cerebral Palsy and Dental Health
Several challenges associated with CP are associated with increased dental health problems:
Children with CP have motor and coordination challenges that limit their ability to perform routine hygiene care
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which may cause frequent regurgitation and vomiting is common in children with CP and may result in dental erosions
Because children with CP are frequently unable to ingest solid food, they tend to have an exclusively liquid or semisolid diet which can increase the risk of dental caries
Dental Management in Children with CP
To ensure better oral health among children with CP, caregivers should ensure the following:
Start the child early on routine daily oral hygiene. Parents’ irregular brushing habits have been associated with poor dental hygiene among children with CP.
Brush their teeth twice a day and use floss at least once a day.
Make it fun by using a toothbrush which is of the child’s favorite color or character.
Sing during brushing routine to reduce stress.
Use toothpaste with fluoride in the right amount.
Consult your physical therapist or occupational therapist for possible brushing devices adapted to your child’s ability.
Most importantly, it is vital that children with CP visit their dentist regularly. Regular visits help the child and the dentist build trust and can help the dentist detect problems before they get worse. Dentists can make accommodations like using Velcro straps to maintain the child’s head position or finger guards and steel mirrors that are less likely to cause injuries. In all their interaction, the dentist should try their best to be gentle and caring.
