Women Behind the Wheel: Medstar Transportation’s Women’s Month Spotlight
March is Women’s Month—a time to recognize the contributions of women across all industries. In transportation, a field that has long been male-dominated, more women continue to step into the role and grow within it—bringing their own experiences, perspectives, and strengths to the work.
At the Company, we see this every day. Our team is made up of individuals who show up with dedication, care, and a strong sense of purpose—qualities that are essential in the kind of service we provide to our clients and communities.
This month, we’re taking a moment to highlight some of the women on our team—sharing their journeys, what inspires them, and the impact they make through the work they do.
CHERYL SWANSON (Driver/Trainer)
What inspired you to work in the transportation industry, especially in a field that is often male-dominated?
My first employment in transportation began in 2013, earning a CDL as a school bus driver for the Seattle school district. It was challenging at first, especially maneuvering the 40-foot buses through winding, narrow, residential streets on hills in busy traffic. But I loved helping children in the community get to their educational programs and classes. I loved being part of making our communities function.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Medstar team?
I love that our type of work attracts and retains people who care about others and who are able to function and problem solve both independently and with our dispatch, safety, fleet, and HR teams. I can rely on the professionalism, kindness, and know-how of my co-workers to help me solve any issue that comes up.
Can you share a moment at work when you felt you truly made a difference in someone’s life?
It is difficult to isolate just one meaningful conversation or event I have had while working with Medstar. I feel blessed by my positive connections with both new and regular clients daily. It warms my heart to be able to be there as an ear for clients who want to share about their lives. I learn so much about the human experience, how different things can be, and yet how truly alike we all are.
What advice or message would you like to share with other women considering this kind of work?
If you enjoy driving and helping people access care, this could be an excellent fit for you. It allows you a great deal of flexibility with your schedule, allows you to work both independently and as part of a team, and you can feel proud every day knowing that Medstar and NEMT drivers are doing valuable and meaningful work.
RENEE STEUER (Driver/Trainer)
What inspired you to work in the transportation industry, especially in a field that is often male-dominated?
Better opportunities and I love to travel. Medstar has made that possible
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Medstar team?
I enjoy helping people who are less fortunate than us because it's hard to find reliable and caring transportation and they are so often extremely grateful. Also, I have a disabled grandson and it has opened my eyes to people with disabilities and respecting them and not making them feel like they are burdens. It makes me feel like I am accomplishing something important.
Can you share a moment at work when you felt you truly made a difference in someone’s life?
I have many special moments with my clients. I feel very fortunate to be able to make a difference in their lives, whether it is just caring for them the best I can during transport or getting them to smile or laugh. I think they make me as happy as maybe I make them— I would like to believe!
What advice or message would you like to share with other women considering this kind of work?
I would love to encourage women to do this job because it is very satisfying and women are inherently nurturing, caring people– and sometimes I think our clients can use a feminine touch.
MARINA PRIPA (Driver/Trainer)
What inspired you to work in the transportation industry, especially in a field that is often male-dominated?
I am increasingly drawn to the transport industry because I find it to be a fulfilling, flexible, and rewarding career. Although the industry has historically been male-dominated, I believe it offers great opportunities for anyone who is passionate about helping others and providing quality service.
My motivation for entering this sector comes from my desire to help people and make a positive difference in their daily lives. I truly enjoy driving and appreciate the flexibility that this career can offer. In addition, the stability and long-term opportunities within the transport industry make it an attractive career choice for me.
Overall, working in this field allows me to combine my interest in driving with my commitment to providing safe, reliable, and supportive service to the community.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Medstar team?
Based on my experience, one of the most enjoyable aspects of being part of the Medstar team is the supportive and family-like atmosphere among colleagues. Team members help one another, share knowledge, and create a positive work environment where everyone feels valued.
Another rewarding aspect is the opportunity to learn new skills. Working with the team allows me to develop my abilities, gain more confidence in my role, and continuously improve my professional performance.
Most importantly, I find great satisfaction in providing clients with a trustworthy and safe driving environment. Knowing that passengers feel secure and comfortable during their journey makes the work meaningful and motivates me to maintain high standards of service.
